Ryedale Explorer Scouts Gain Vital Outdoor First Aid Skills Thanks to Adventure Safe Partnership

Ryedale District Scouts is delighted to announce a valuable partnership with Adventure Safe, a leading provider of outdoor training. This collaboration is enabling Explorer Scouts across Ryedale to receive their Level 3 Outdoors First Aid Emergency Action 8-hour qualification, equipping them with essential skills for their adventurous pursuits.

Safety is paramount in Scouting, and as our Explorer Scouts increasingly participate in challenging outdoor activities and expeditions, having robust first aid knowledge is crucial. This comprehensive training, delivered by the experienced professionals at Adventure Safe, goes beyond basic first aid and is specifically tailored to the types of incidents that can occur in outdoor environments.

The Level 3 Outdoors First Aid Emergency Action course is an intensive 8-hour program designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to confidently manage medical emergencies in outdoor settings. The curriculum covers a range of vital topics, including:

  • Incident Management: Learning how to assess a situation, make it safe, and prioritize casualties.
  • Treating Unconscious Casualties: Including the recovery position and basic airway management.
  • CPR and AED Use: Essential life support skills.
  • Managing Bleeding and Shock: Techniques for controlling severe bleeding and recognizing and treating shock.
  • Addressing Common Outdoor Injuries: Such as sprains, strains, fractures, and head injuries.
  • Environmental Considerations: Understanding and treating conditions like hypothermia and heat exhaustion.
  • Recognition and Management of Life-Threatening Illnesses: Including asthma, diabetes, and anaphylaxis.
  • Improvisation: Using available resources in an outdoor setting to provide care.

For our Explorer Scouts, attaining this Level 3 qualification is incredibly important. It not only enhances their personal safety and the safety of those around them during Scouting activities, but it also provides them with a valuable life skill that is transferable to many other aspects of their lives.

Having trained first aiders within our Explorer units fosters a greater sense of confidence and self-reliance among the young people. They are empowered to react effectively and calmly in an emergency situation, potentially making a significant difference before professional medical help arrives. This qualification is particularly relevant for those undertaking expeditions, such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, where they may be in remote locations.

The partnership with Adventure Safe ensures that our Explorer Scouts are receiving high-quality, relevant, and practical training from experienced outdoor first aid instructors. This investment in their skills is an investment in their safety and their ability to be responsible and capable individuals.

Ryedale District Scouts is proud to be working with Adventure Safe to provide this vital training and looks forward to seeing our Explorer Scouts confidently apply their new skills on their many future adventures.
